Day nine was diverse and a little melancholy, not in a negative way, but looking at sights with different eyes, knowing my time here was nearly over. I started with a visit to the Carnegie Hall Museum, a first; what an architectural marvel, and I was surprised to see what famous performers have graced Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. The Hop On Hop Off bus was next on my … [Read more...]
What a day eight…
Today started slow because I had to go to 55th and 5th to use my Groupon before my stay in NYC was over. (Groupons are discounts on food, tours, events, etc., and they help save on expenses and encourage going to new places) I then went to TKTS and bought a ticket for the Broadway play, Waitress. Then, after asking three people, I found the train to Queens. According to my … [Read more...]
Day seven of NYC Pass
Only three days left, and I realize I’m not going to get to see it all. It gives me a good reason to come back. If one lived here permanently, I sense s/he would create a small community of friends and activities, and not experience as much as I have. I asked people born and raised in NYC if they had seen the Macy’s Parade or the Ball Drop, and they said, “No, I wouldn’t even … [Read more...]
Days five and six of NYC Pass
Sunday was a do nothing day. I think I’m tired. I tried to tour Madison Square Garden, but bull riding was happening, so they canceled the tours. I was surprised by the number of New Yorkers interested in bull riding. Leaving the building, I passed through groups of protesters. They were touting the mistreatment of bulls. I assumed they had never owned a bull nor … [Read more...]
Days three & four of NYC Pass
Today, day three, I went to the Bronx and Yankee Stadium, two firsts. I’m no baseball guru, but it was a thrill to come up from the subway and see the large stadium rising before me. I made it in time for a one-hour tour, and it was impressive. It opened in 2009, the year they claimed the Series. The guard told me, with sad eyes, “We haven't won it since.” After the … [Read more...]
Two days of ten; New York City Pass
Before I left home in November, I bought a ten day NYC Pass. I am using it my last ten days. I know the pass is overpriced, but I thought the pass would entice me see things I wouldn’t ordinarily choose. After Trina and Paisly had left, I found the uptown train and went to 190th Street to see the Cloisters, a first. I had never heard of them and did not know what a cloister … [Read more...]
Seven days of fun…OVER
Trina and Paisly left on the 4th, early in the morning. Our seven days of fun in NYC came to an end, but we gave it our all. On their first day, we enjoyed the company of good friend Lila and her friend Danny. We saw two broadway plays, learned to make gelato, toured NBC, saw World Trade Center Memorial in the rain, became beautiful at Sephora, drooled on four floors of … [Read more...]
Happy New Year
OMGoodness - Trina, Paisly, and I saw the ball fall on Times Square, and we agreed to describe the experience as AWESOME. We decided we did not want to be pushed, shoved, and compressed by the millions plus people on and around 42nd Street, but to be further back on 52nd street where we had a full view without the condensed crowds. It was a good theory. But, like many … [Read more...]
Cal leaves, kids arrive
My daughter and granddaughter arrive today and my husband leaves tomorrow. Many change in experiences for the next week. I know we will run our best race to see all we can. Cal and I have had a lovely time, even though he has had trouble with all the walking. He doesn’t know if it is a muscle, ligament, or nerve, but it has slowed him down. Even so, we walked to Little … [Read more...]
Playing catchup
I'm having too much fun to blog. Posting only pictures is my lazy, catchup way to keep you traveling with me. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! Christmas in NYC has been an experience I will not forget soon. (The sad part was I missed being with my kids and grandchildren - shows the positive and negative of life.) … [Read more...]
More Glitz…
Pictures don't begin to do these beautiful windows and trees justice, but I hope you can add your imagination for the lights and festive energy in the city. Oh, the Library was a masterpiece of marble and oak, and Andrew Carnegie helped build the NY branch libraries just as he did the one in Sterling. … [Read more...]
No words…just Christmas Glitz
Baby, it’s COLD outside
I added two more theater experiences. One was Perfect Crime at the Theater Center on Broadway and 50th. A first. It was a mystery, of course, with gun shots and all. I did not get sleepy as I sat front row, center. I felt sympathy for the five actors because they worked so hard and did such a great job for an audience of under twenty. I think it must be hard to make a living as … [Read more...]
Radio, Oops, and Art
Sunday, the 11th, started with a play called; a Christmas Carol: A live Radio Play, a first. Performed on the fourth floor of Roebuck Theater on 44th. If you are as old as I am, you remember family gathered around the radio. There was no TV or computers or electronic games. The radio was it. This play was adorable. It replicated what went on behind the sound on the radio. A … [Read more...]
92Y, grammar school, and Imbible
92Y, connect to the YMCA, is a cultural and community center. For over 140 years, this Jewish organization has offered arts and ideas for the community to help change lives and improve the world. I went to hear a reading by Zadie Smith as she promoted her new novel, Swing Time, a first. She read for twenty minutes and was then interviewed by Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah. It … [Read more...]
