Help is just down the street

Jennifer Goble

The holiday season from Thanksgiving through New Years is often fun. It flows with family gatherings, social happenings, and wonderment. But for many, it is a time of loneliness, anxiety, sadness, and self-doubt. The culprit could be financial pressure, commitments, unrealistic
expectations, fatigue, stress, or inability to be, or not to be, with one’s family and friends.

Symptoms of holiday depression could include headaches, excessive drinking, over or under eating, insomnia, irritability, isolation, missing work, sleeping for long hours, communicating less, or merely experiencing unusual behavior.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, reach out to your friends, family, and co-workers. Support is vital in regaining your sense of wellbeing. Also, take special care of yourself, eat well, get enough sleep, and schedule quiet time.

Counseling or support groups can also be very beneficial. Following is an alphabetized list of mental health providers and services in Sterling. It takes a healthy person to say, “I need some help with this.”
